- Most times a cough is a common respiratory symptom of allergies. Often times allergies are triggered by substances called allergens. An example of allergens are pollen, mold, animal dander, dust, food allergies, insect bites and any other substance that triggers an allergic reaction. It is the reaction to allergens that spur the cough. A cough is the body's way of reacting to the exposure of the substance. The cough is often accompanied by postnasal drip and congestion.
There are many products that promise to bring relief from allergies but many also have undesirable side effects. To relieve the the symptoms of the cough, many choose to take a product containing codeine, but this does nothing to relieve the allergies.
To effectively treat all the symptoms of allergies, an individual is best served by taking a product that is a histamine blocker, specially a H1 and H2 blocker. Products such as Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec work for multisymptoms. The major difference with Benadryl is that you can purchase it over the counter, it provides fast relief and you do not have to take it every day for it to be effective.
