Dosage

• To properly dose for a dog, you weigh the animal first. For every ten pounds, administer 1/2 teaspoon of Pepto-Bismol. This can be repeated every three to four hours until the diarrhea subsides. The easiest way to administer the medicine is via syringe. You can squirt the liquid in the back of the dog's throat, forcing the animal to swallow.
  
  

Uses

• The Pepto-Bismol can be used for all types of dogs six weeks or older. If you have a puppy younger than six weeks you should consult a physician prior to administering the medication. The Pepto-Bismol should help make a firmer stool in the dog and help keep the pet hydrated. The longer the diarrhea lasts the more fluid the puppy will lose.
  
  

Side Effects

• The color of the dog's tongue might darken when taking the substance. Stools might also appear darker in color. The coloring of the excrement may become grey, black or green. It is possible to overdose your dog on the medication, so if the animal seems to worsen or act strange, consult your veterinarian immediately. Be certain to tell the vet exactly how often and how much Pepto-Bismol you have been giving your pet.
  
  

Other Needs

• During the illness, your pet might eat less than normal due to an upset stomach. You can help curb the feeling by feeding the dog rice mixed with chicken bullion. Be sure to get the dog drinking water. It is helpful to bring the fluid to the dog so it does not have to move or seek out the fluid. The combination of medication, food and water should help get the dog's digestive tract back to normal.
