- 1). Ask your veterinarian for advice on the best type of food to feed your dog to help prevent dog dander. A good diet will help prevent shedding, thus preventing dander. Also ask about a product that can be mixed with their dry or canned food and increases healthier, softer skin.
- 2). Bathe your dog twice a month. Using a non-toxic, anti-allergen pet shampoo will help prevent dog dander. Dry your dog as much as possible with a towel. Avoid blow drying the dog's hair inside the house. If you can, blow dry your dog outside in your backyard or in your garage.
- 3). Brush your dog daily to prevent dander. Removing as much of your pet's loose hair as possible will help keep dog dander off your floors and furniture. Brush your dog outside instead of inside the house, since dander easily becomes airborne and can remain in the air for hours.
- 4). Vacuum floors and furniture with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate absorbing) vacuum cleaner. The HEPA vacuum cleaner traps the smallest particles, such as allergens, in its filters, not allowing particles to go airborne.
