- Clam shells are abundant and come in a variety of sizes appropriate for using to create a centerpiece. Clam shells sold for commercial use range in color from purest white to white with pink striations. You can use the color of the clam shell to coordinate table linens and flower decor if desired.
To create a dramatic centerpiece using clam shells, build a tower of light and water. Purchase tall, cylindrical-glass vases at a dollar store for each table. Be sure to get larger size vases at least 18-inches high and at least 5- to 6-inches in diameter so a hand can fit comfortably in the vase. Buy several bags of loose clam shells of various sizes for contrast and interest. Add light and water elements to the tower of shells by using submersible floralytes and polymer pearls.
Submersible floralytes are wireless, miniature, self-powered lighting units which will illuminate the length of your shell tower when strategically placed in the vase. Submersible floralytes can last up to 48 hours and are available in a variety of colors.
Alternate layers of clam shells, plumped polymer pearls, and the floralytes to fill the vase almost to the top, starting with polymer pearls and ending with shells. Be sure to turn the floralytes on when assembling the centerpiece or you'll have to disassemble it to reach them and switch them on later.
The clam shell tower centerpiece eliminates the need for fresh flowers. You can create this look on a smaller scale by changing the height of the vase, or by using a lower glass container such as a wide bowl. Look for other clam shell-inspired accents such as candles and candle holders to complete the table-scape.
