Pomegranate and Breast Cancer?

A research publicized in the January 2010 issue of Cancer Prevention Research suggests that pomegranate can prevent and inhibit the growth of breast cancer.

The obstacle is that the aromatase enzyme converts androgen into estrogen, and also estrogen stimulates the proliferation of breast cancer cells.

Promegranate, a rich resource of ellagitannins, has attracted recent consideration thanks to its anticancer in addition to antiatherosclerotic properties. With intake, pomegranate's ellagitannins hydrolyze, releasing ellagic acid, which is next converted to urolithin.

The study investigated the action of ten compounds in pomegranate to determine which inhibit the production of aromatase enzyme. No less than six of those where identified as exhibiting antiaromatase activity.

Amongst those, urolithin B(UB) was demonstrated to most efficiently inhibit aromatase activity in a live cell assay. Kinetic analysis of UB showed mixed inhibition, suggesting that more than one inhibitory mechanism was at work. Proliferation assays also determined that UB significantly inhibited testosterone- induced MCF- 7aro cell proliferation. The remaining test compounds additionally exhibited antiproliferative activity, therefore supplying to cancer preventing properties.

The study concludes "These studies suggest that pomegranate ET-derived compounds have potential for the prevention of estrogen- responsive breast cancers".

Cancer Prevention Research, the latest journal coming from the American Association for Cancer Research, is devoted solely to cancer prevention. The journal publishes very important innovative studies, critical reviews, and perspectives in the major topic areas of oncogenesis, risk factors and risk assessment, early detection investigation, and chemopreventive and additional interventions, including the fundamental science behind them. Cancer Prevention Research comprises preclinical, clinical and translational research, with specific interest given to molecular discoveries and an emphasis on building a translational bridge between the basic and clinical sciences.

A very good source of pomegranate extract, Botanical Vitality is standardized to 50% total polyphenols with 20% ellagic acid. See http://www.botanicalvitality.com for details.
