Being a fashion designer can be a very glamorous career. If you're successful, you get to star in international fashion shows, be featured in magazines, have your own line, be bought by stores, and worn by celebrities. The world of fashion is very closely associated with music, film, entertainment, parties and travel. As a result, many people around the world want to be a part of it. But you don't just wake up and become a fashion designer. Not only does it take years of work and commitment to find your style and build it, but there needs to be a degree of natural talent as well. Not to mention passion.
Fashion designers are the types of people who used to go shopping with their mothers as children and would sketch the clothes she tried on. They ran boutiques out of their parents basement when they were kids. Cut up old clothes and sewed them into new things. And of course they braved all kinds of looks.
Having said that, most fashion famous fashion designers are minimalist dressers. They are concerned by beauty and making other people look and feel beautiful, but they are too focused on envisioning how to do it, to really spend a lot of time focusing on their own looks. They find their inspiration in everything that they see including architecture, nature, films and other mediums of art.
While much of being a designer is organic and can be self-taught, a lot of what it takes to be successful is keeping up with trends. That doesn't mean designing what's already out there, but paying attention to popular fabrics, what cuts are currently on trend, seasonal colours and prints, and generally the looks that people are responding to.
One of the best parts about fashion is that it's cyclical, so it's worth holding on to great pieces because even if they go out of style next year, they'll be back in again. Last season for instance saw a return to floral prints, and tight-waisted, long, puff skirts for women thanks to the popularity of hit TV show Mad Men. The show's 1950s fashion style inspired haute-couture designers to look back a few decades and repopularize some of the decade's hottest trends. Similarly, the 1980s signature shoulder pads were reintroduced a couple of years ago, as was the decade's obsession with polka dots and neon colours.
So you see there are many sides to being a fashion designer. There's the natural talent, the interest, the artistic eye, the focus on beauty and the understanding of trends. Of course, once your line has been made, you still have to find people to buy it and wear it.
