- The NRA was founded in 1871 by Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate, a pair of Union officers from the Civil War. In 1949, the NRA Hunt Club was formed with a focus on youth programs and hunting safety.
- One of the Hunt Club's largest education programs is the Youth Hunter Education Challenge, an advanced program for youths who seek to continue their hunting skills and knowledge. In addition, NRA-certified instructors teach a number of clinics on different types of game and firearms.
- The NRA Hunt Club sponsors a number of competitive shooting and show events, as well as programs for the disabled and the poor. The NRA foundation has raised money for conservation programs, range development and the expansion of educational programs.
- "The American Hunter" is the principle hunting publication of the NRA and focuses exclusively on hunting-related issues, including hunting tips as well as updates on hunters' rights and legislation.
- Both annual and lifetime memberships are offered. Benefits include free subscriptions to NRA publications, discounts on programs and services and a variety of insurance coverages, including compensation for hunting-related accidents.
