- Want to tan the natural way? More so than any other strategy, this requires patience, determination and time. Getting sunburned is only a step backwards, so even though sunscreen seems counter-intuitive, it is still a must. Slather on a little lotion and get ready to bake, but not for too long. Once you feel your skin start to tingle, it is time to switch sides or come inside. The key to tanning is using short amounts of time over many days. Be brief and consistent.
- Tanning salons are here to rescue us when it is cold outside or we are just strapped for time. Salons also give the added benefit of tanning everywhere; no more bathing suit lines. Most women can become reasonably dark by tanning one to three times a week. Once you have reached your desired color, you only need one visit a week to maintain it. If you intend to become a regular at a specific salon, you can purchase a monthly membership card that gives you unlimited tans whenever you want them.
- You can buy sunless tanning lotion at any local supermarket. This method is safest, while also leaving the most room for error. If you choose this method, be sure to follow the directions carefully. Some lotions are designed to give a dark tan instantly. Others work gradually with daily use. When using a gradual tanner, you control how dark you get. There is less risk of becoming orange. Also, you won't be making any co-workers suspicious when you are pasty white Monday and a beach goddess on Tuesday.
