Every once in awhile I enjoy purchasing craft kits. I like the fact that I don't have to go through all of my craft supplies to locate the items I need to construct the particular craft I have in mind. It's also helpful to know whether the craft kit is a hit with my kids because then we know whether or not it would make a great birthday gift for one of my nieces and nephews. This review is of 4M's Magnetic Tile Art craft kit.
4M Magnetic Tile Art ()
Although I would have expected this craft to be geared toward children in preschool and Kindergarten, the company suggests no one under the age of 8 use the kit. I believe this is because they classify the magnets as choking hazards, which they are if your child were to attempt to put them in his or her mouth. The best way to handle this situation is to take the magnets out of the kit and store them in a safe location until the craft has been completed. Then you can add the magnets yourself and display the craft.
What Can You Do With This Kit ?
The Magnetic Tile Art kit comes with 10 tiles, 10 magnets, and a set of paints. Kids are free to paint the tiles using any decoration they please. The tiles can be a picture of the family cat, have the child's name written on them, or show what the child's passion is. My oldest daughter loves horseback riding so her tile had a horse pattern on it. My youngest child is special needs so I helped her make a tile that had her name on it, while my nephew went with is favorite superhero - Spiderman.
After the tiles are decorated, kids can attach a magnet to the back and place them on the refrigerator, school locker, or any other metal surface.
Pros
The tiles are good quality. This is important because small hands tend to drop things. Tiles aren't a craft supply I generally have around the house, which is what makes this kit worth the money.
The squares are 2-inches by 2-inches. They aren't so huge that a magnet can't hold them up, but they are big enough to do a little drawing or add a name.
You don't need to get out glue to attach the magnets. The magnets have a sticky side so you can just press them into place once your tile is decorated and the paint has dried.
Kids can decorate the tiles so that they can become gifts for friends and relatives. I don't know a single grandma, grandpa, aunt, or uncle that wouldn't proudly display one of these magnetic tiles on their refrigerator if given one as a gift.
Cons
There isn't enough paint in the kit to decorate all 10 tiles. This wasn't an issue for me since I have a ton extra paints and paintbrushes in the house. There also wasn't enough color choices for my kids, but again I already had extra paint.
There is only 1 paintbrush per kit, which isn't a con if you are only doing this craft with one child. Again, this wasn't an issue for us as I have plenty of extra paintbrushes.
Recommendation
I do recommend 4M's Magnetic Tile Art kit. I think it makes for a great gift, as well as something fun for your kids to do on a rainy weekend.
