While there are several laser products available, Dr. Levin, at New Tampa Foot and Ankle, has done a comprehensive research to find the best and most effective solution for his patients that are seeking a solution to treat nail fungus. Dr Levin became the first Podiatrist in Florida to offer CoolBreeze instead of the other lasers in the market for several reasons, the biggest reason is the credibility, history and stability of CoolTouch Inc., manufacturer of the Cool Breeze. Dr Levin was looking for a leading U.S.-based developer and manufacturer of advanced laser products for medical professionals, a company with a proven history in the field of skin lasers.
A comparison was made with the Pinpointe laser (the other laser for nail fungus) which is simply a laser designed for dental procedures with modifications to treat toenails.
The Pinpointe has a small spot size that can lead to a problem known as stacking. Stacking comes from overlapping of the laser beam in the same area possibly leading to burns and damage. Small spot size can also lead to missed areas of treatment. With the Pintpointe laser, the treatment is performed with minimal control of the beam distance resulting in unsuccessful treatment, making the current single treatment problematic. Contrasting with the unique feature of the CoolBreeze Handpiece, that uses an adjustable spot size from 3 mm to 10 mm allowing adjustments based on nail size for more accuracy, this means that each patient can receive a customized treatment leading to the best possible outcome.
The CoolBreeze laser is so advanced that it can be set to reach and detect the proper target temperature. The treatment stops automatically and the nail is cooled with a cryogen spray allowing fungal death without damaging surrounding skin or the nail growth plate; CoolTouch's impeccable safety results from its incorporating pulsed cooling and real-time temperature feedback into its treatments. The CoolTouch laser can be controlled and the treatment temperature to kill the fungus can occur automatically while incorporating safety. Other lasers currently being used do not incorporate these significant features for patients, leading to less desirable results and fewer safety features.
Additional features of the CoolBreeze laser is its quick treatment time of about 15 minutes for 10 toes versus 50 minutes for currently available lasers including the Pinpointe laser. When it comes to treatment economics, the cost is still substantially lower than any other treatment available. At Dr Levin's office, the price of treatment includes complete care of all 10 nails with 3 guaranteed treatments, one full year of follow up with photos to evaluate progress, topical skin and nail antifungal medication to prevent re-infection/re-contamination as part your initial treatment, while Pint Point laser and other doctors in the Tampa area, charge per each toe nail treated and do not treat all 10 nails as a comprenhensive treatment.
There is increasing evidence that to be effective one treatment is not sufficient. Dr. Levin recommends 2-3 treatments and feels that this is extremely important and necessary due to the different growth phases of the nail and fungus; the best results occur when the patient receives at least 2 treatments. The cost of 2-3 treatments with the Cool Touch is usually the same or less compared to one treatment with the Pinpointe laser and compared to newer lasers entering the market.
Dr Levin liked the higher wavelength of the beam and feels that toe nails can be more safely penetrated and treated with this different wavelength. The CoolBreeze laser produces 1320nm wave length which is better and more effective against the fungus.
The most important issue is results. The photos found in our website gallery are from Dr Levin's patients that are currently under CoolBreeze treatment at New Tampa Foot and Ankle office. Please click here to review and compare before and after pictures.
Note that all of the lasers mentioned here are under clinical investigation for approval of treatment for toenail fungus (onycomicosis)This procedure is not covered by any insurance company.
