- 1). Develop your economy. In "Starcraft 2," harvest minerals and vespene gas to produce structures and units. To optimize the economy of your bases, make sure you have at least two worker units, such as SCV, probe or drone, mining each mineral patch and three workers mining each vespene geyser.
- 2). Build more workers and expand. After you achieve the optimal number of workers for your main base, send a worker to scout out a new resource patch where you can build a second base. Keep in mind that the closer your expansion base is to your main base, the easier it will be to defend. After your expansion base is established, send over excess workers from your main base to harvest the fresh minerals.
- 3). Spend resources quickly. If you ever find that you have more than 400 minerals or gas, spend them immediately by researching upgrades, building more units or building more advanced structures. Having a stockpile of resources is always a clear indication that you're doing something wrong.
- 4). Queue up only one unit at a time at any of your unit producing structures. Although queuing up units might make it easier for you to multi-task, the resources that are spent on the units waiting to be built can often be better spent by researching upgrades or building more unit producing structures.
- 5). Scout your opponents. Check the enemy bases frequently to see what they're building. By taking note of key structures or units in enemy bases, you can get an idea of what they're planning, thereby enabling you to plan an appropriate counter strategy.
- 6). Use hotkeys. Hotkeys are essential for getting better at "Starcraft 2." Not only is there a hotkey for every basic command in the game, but, by pressing "Ctrl" plus any number key, you can set up custom hotkeys for any currently selected unit(s) or structure(s). For example, if you have four barracks, instead of clicking on each barracks individually to build a unit you could highlight all of them and press "Ctrl" + "5" to hotkey them to the "5" key. With your barracks hotkeyed, you don't even have to look at them to build units because you can just press "5" and then "M" to build a marine. Mastering hotkeys is what will allow you to keep producing units while mounting an attack.
- 7). Organize your army when attacking so that the units with a shorter attack range are in the front, while the units you want protected are in the back. Many units in "Starcraft 2" also have special abilities that are extremely effective in certain situations. Commands to use these abilities, however, have to be delivered manually by clicking the specific ability icon or pressing the appropriate hotkey. Using custom hotkeys to group your different types of units together can help you manage your army and use units most effectively in a fight.
- 8). Watch replays. All of your matches in "Starcraft 2" get automatically recorded so, in the event that you lose a match, go back and watch the replay so you can see where you went wrong and make note of the strategy your opponent used against you. You can even go online and watch the replays of pro players so you can see the different strategies that are used in high level games.
