A common question is why the Sci Fi Channel renamed itself to Syfy (pronounced Sci Fi). The most commonly explained reason is that because Sci Fi is a genre, it cant be trademarked by an individual company. So, the homophone (sounds the same, but a different spelling) of Syfy was created to make the owners happy.
