- 1). Cut, dice, shred or julienne your vegetables as you normally would using a sharp knife. Rinse your vegetables after cutting, using a colander.
- 2). Remove your vegetables from the colander and place them in a bowl immediately after you've rinsed them. Immediate removal will leave some water on the vegetables, which will be just enough water for steaming.
- 3). Remove the middle tray of the microwave steamer by lifting it up and out of the lower tray. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the bottom of the lower tray.
- 4). Place the middle tray back over the lower tray. Place the vegetables on the middle tray in a single layer. Set the lid of the microwave steamer in place over the middle tray. Make sure that the vent is in the open position during microwave steaming if your steamer is equipped with one.
- 5). Set the microwave vegetable steamer in your microwave. Steam the vegetables in the microwave for three-minute intervals.
- 6). Remove the vegetable steamer from the microwave using an oven mitt and place it on a heat-resistant surface. Wait three to five minutes before removing the lid.
- 7). Press a fork into the vegetables to check for tenderness. Pop the steamer back into the microwave for an additional three minutes if the vegetables are not as tender as you desire.
- 8). Open the microwave door, remove the steamer and place the vegetable steamer on a heat-resistant surface. Leave the vent open on the microwave vegetable steamer to allow the remaining steam to escape. Serve.
