Definition: Sonification is the process of displaying data in an audio format (other than traditional speech). One of the major goals of sonification is to perceptualize the data in new ways, in contrast to more traditional visual representations of data. Some believe that certain types of patterns, especially discordant patterns, may be more easily discovered in auditory form.
One of the most commonly-known types of sonification is the Geiger counter, which emits a series of beeps when it detects radiation.
The more radiation that is detected, the more rapidly the beeps are emitted. Such a device could be designed with a visual display, of course. Similarly, many visual data displays could be designed to provide auditory outputs. Medical heart rate monitors, for example, often include both a visual and auditory component, to alert health care workers to changes in the health status of the patient.
