- 1). Place the slide on your pinky finger and play the guitar for several minutes. Determine how loose the slide is. The slide should be supported entirely by the finger, and not by the muscles in the hand. The slide is not being used properly or efficiently if your hand is helping support the slide.
- 2). Cut several strips of adhesive-backed foam to line the interior surface of the slide. Use window weatherstripping foam. Other items work may work as well: rubber, leather, cotton, and cloth. The old bluesmen were creative and used whatever was available.
- 3). Pad the inside of the slide with the padding material. Place the slide on your pinky finger to test the comfort and fit. The slide should fit snugly on the pinky finger without moving up or down.
- 4). Play the guitar with the padded slide. The weight of the slide should be supported entirely by the pinky finger, making it easier to use. This gives you more control over the slide, and improves your expressiveness.
