- 1). Choose a good site for your peach tree, where the tree will get both full sun every day and complete drainage. Peach trees don't do well with standing water and will suffer in a site that puddles after a storm. Peach trees can grow to over 30 feet in height and spread, so choose a location that offers plenty of space for mature growth.
- 2). Mix a combination of half compost and half quick-draining soil into your site to a depth of 1 to 1 1/2 feet, to give peaches both drainage and nutrition. Dig a hole as deep as the peach seedling's root ball and at least twice as wide for planting. Once it's planted, the seedling's root ball should be just under the surface of the soil.
- 3). Water peach trees with 1 to 2 inches of water a week, particularly during dry periods. Peach trees don't require a lot of water, but do better when soil is consistently moist. Give peaches a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in the spring, per manufacturer directions, to promote growth and blooming.
