- 1). Record the number in each of the displays if you have a digital meter. Take the difference between the current and the last month's reading to calculate the number of energy units used since the previous reading.
- 2). Read all the displays from right to left when gathering data from electric dial meters. Record the lowest number if the pointer is between two numbers. If the pointer is on a number, record the next lower number unless the pointer on the dial on the right has passed zero.
- 3). Read all the displays from left to right when gathering data from gas dial meters. If the pointer on the dial to the right has passed "0," use the number that the pointer is directly on. If the pointer on the dial to the right has not passed "0," use the next lower number.
- 4). Record each number on a utility log as you read it. Compare your monthly readings to monitor your energy usage.
