Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis
Ramsey Nijem vs. Tony Ferguson
What Clay Guida (28-11) brings to the table: Guida is as tough as tough gets. If anyone ever belonged in the main event of a TUF finale, it's him. Along with this, Guida's cardio is freakishly good, he can take a big time punch, and he never gives up. Altogether, this has resulted in him winning more fight of the night awards than most.
Taking things further, Guida possesses outstanding wrestling skills.
He is solid when it comes to submissions, though most of his wins in this arena come more from pushing the pace, which leads to rear naked chokes. His striking skills are solid as well, though in the past he has tended to open himself up to big shots. That said, in his last fight against Takanori Gomi his defensive striking was spot on.
What Anthony Pettis (13-1) brings to the table: If you saw the jumping round kick off the cage wall that Pettis employed in his last WEC fight to take home their lightweight championship against Benson Henderson, then you know he possesses some of the best kicks in the business. Pettis is a high level black belt in Tae Kwon Do that works with Duke Roufus. In other words, he's an outstanding striker with a rather unorthodox style (for MMA, anyway). Further, he possesses solid takedown defense and much better than advertised submissions, including an ability to end fights from his back.
That said, many wonder how he will do as he takes a step up in competition by fighting in the UFC.
Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis Prediction: Guida will no doubt try to be hard to hit on his feet, as he was against Takanori Gomi, at least until such time as he can use his striking to get inside for a takedown. He'll attempt to make this a war of attrition via ground and pound. Though he'll likely gain a couple of takedowns, as he did against Gomi in his last fight, there's a big difference between Gomi and Pettis on the ground. Namely, Pettis can fight off of his back and is not easy to submit, nor control.
Therefore, expect Guida to gain some takedowns and deliver with some ground and pound. However, also expect a few Pettis submission attempts to fall by the wayside and net him some points in the process. Given this, I believe the person with the better striking skills will win this fight.
Anthony Pettis defeats Clay Guida by unanimous decision.
What Ramsey Nijem (4-1) brings to the table: Nijem comes to the TUF 13 Finale from Team Dos Santos. On the show, he's been a little bit different, seeming to want to take his clothes off way too often. That said, he's a good wrestler, comes to fight with heart, and has solid striking skills as well.
What Tony Ferguson (10-2) brings to the table: Ferguson comes to the TUF 13 Finale from Team Lesnar.
In sum, he possesses solid stand up skills and hits very hard, as his six (T)KO's would seem to attest to. Ferguson also possesses more than solid wrestling capabilities (we're talking about a two time All American at Grand Valley State), and can submit people too.
Late in the show, Ferguson made himself infamous for some of the things he said to teammates while intoxicated.
Ramsey Nijem vs. Tony Ferguson Prediction: This is a tough call. Overall, I believe that Ferguson brings a slightly better skill set to this match. That said, I have more confidence in what I saw from Nijem on the show, for some reason. Expect him to push the pace and get in Ferguson's face. It won't be pretty, but.....
Ramsey Nijem defeats Tony Ferguson by decision.
