- 1). Ensure all ventilation hatches are fully open on a charcoal barbecue to aid airflow for starting the barbecue effectively. Stack and center charcoal pieces in decreasing width layers interspersed with barbecue lighting cubes, as recommended by Weber. Use a long barbecue match to ignite each barbecue lighting cube and wait until the charcoal becomes gray before beginning to cook.
- 2). Keep the lid open on a Weber gas barbecue during the starting procedure to maintain airflow and prevent gas accumulation. Check that the control knob is in the "Off" position. Rotate the burner control knob to the "Start" position, and press the ignition button repeatedly to provide a series of sparks to ignite the gas and start the barbecue.
- 3). Insert the temperature control unit into the corresponding receptacle on the side of a Weber electric barbecue, and check that the temperature control knob is in the "Off" position. Ensure the barbecue lid is open before inserting the cable plug into a minimum 15-amp GFI grounded power socket, as recommended by Weber. Rotate the temperature control knob to position "High" to start the barbecue, checking that the indicator light comes on to confirm the barbecue has started.
- 4). Troubleshoot for simple issues when you have a starting problem with your Weber barbecue. Check for common problems with a charcoal barbecue, such as making sure the charcoal and lighting cubes are dry, and that there is adequate airflow inside the barbecue base to keep the charcoal burning. Replace the battery on an electronic ignition in a gas barbecue to rule out a simple power problem. Remove the plug from the electrical socket and ensure the temperature control unit inserts fully on a Weber electric barbecue if the red indicator light does not come on, then plug the cable back in, turn the control knob and see if the light now comes on.
