How to Design Your Own Dream House

How to Design Your Own Dream House

    • 1). Familiarize yourself with technical blueprint terms, markings and lingo, such as inch and foot markings. This will help a professional follow your plans later, as well as enhance the communication between you.

    • 2). Decide on the style of home you want, such as Victorian, ranch-style, loft, log cabin, castle, beach house or chateau. Browse home and garden magazines and websites to see which styles of homes continuously attract your attention.

Save pictures or take pictures of the homes you like the best for future reference. Add these to your folder.

    • 3). Figure out what size of home you want and need. This may need to be cut down later due to zoning or budget restrictions, so it's always better to go larger than what you really need. Make a list of how many rooms the home should have and what they will be used for. This is also the stage to dictate how many levels your home will have. Browse predesigned floorplans online or in magazines to get a feel for what you like. Put the list in your folder when you're not using it.

    • 4). Design a basic outline of what you think your home should look like. Draw the basic shape of the house using the paper, pen and ruler. Add walls to designate rooms creating a basic floorplan.

    • 5). Place windows and doors where you envision them in each room. Add counters, cabinets, toilets, bathtubs, showers and closets to the appropriate rooms.

    • 6). When you're happy with the floorplan you've created, sketch in furniture, to scale. Contact a contractor or architect in your area to complete the blue prints.

    • 7). File the blue prints with the zoning department to find out if your home adheres to all guidelines and regulations for your area.
