Beautiful plants nestled securely in appropriately sized garden pots add vibrant color to your landscape and enhance the appeal of the area. There are many types of beautiful flowers that you can grow in pots both inside and outside your home. While potted annuals display attractive blooms for one growing season, perennials bounce back on their own the following year. - Globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) is an easy-to-grow annual belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. Plants grow between 6 and 30 inches high and 1 foot wide, depending on the variety, and feature stiff branches and papery flowers. The slender long leaves start white but turn green as they mature. The 1 ½-inch-long, oval-shaped flower heads bloom continuously from summer until fall. Although the individual flowers are unremarkable, the showy, paper-like bracts that form the major part of each flower appear in different shades of white, lavender, rose, purple and orange. Commonly used as an edging or border plant, the virtually trouble-free plant thrives in pots filled with well-draining, moist soil. A sun-loving plant, it also attracts butterflies.
- The red flowering poinsettia is perhaps the most popular potted Christmas plant, according to the University of Missouri Extension website. Besides red, plants also appear in pink, white and variegated varieties. Poinsettia prefers well-draining, slightly moist soil with a temperature range between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Coral bells provide show-stopping color and beauty to a shaded or partially-shaded spot during the summer months. The hardy plant thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8 and produces attractive foliage and long-stemmed white or pink blooms. Although the flowers add vibrant color to the pot, it is the brightly-colored foliage in shades of blackish purple, white, yellow and red, chocolate brown and lime that makes the plant stand out. Some varieties produce two-toned leaves while others feature foliage with ruffled edges. The low-maintenance plants prefer well-draining, good-quality soil.
- Available from mid-winter through spring, cyclamen is a beautiful perennial that features heart-shaped leaves with attractive greenish-gray mottling. Flowers appear in shades of white, pink, red and salmon, depending on the variety selected. The plant prefers well-draining, moderately-moist soil and full sunlight during the cold, winter months.
- Potted hydrangeas are popular plants that add vibrant color to their indoor or outdoor locations. Although large varieties reach heights of 6 to 15 feet, potted hydrangeas grow from 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. The flowering plant features large, evergreen leaves and large puff-ball-like blooms in shades of pink, blue, green and white. Hydrangeas thrive in cool, shaded areas in well-draining, moist soil. Popular potted varieties include Syriacus, Macrophylla and Aborescens.
