- 1). Clean the garden snips. If there is rust on them, remove it with a wire brush. When the snips are rust free, dip the blades in a mild bleach solution to disinfect them and prevent moving garden viruses between plants. Sharpen the blade by moving the oiled honing stone across it in a single direction.
- 2). Cut the scape just above the first leaf growing below the flowers if trimming to improve plant vigor. If no leaves are present, trim the scape at its base. For the maximum impact on plant health, trim the scape as possible after the plant is done blossoming, to minimize the amount of energy the plant puts into seed production.
- 3). Cut the scape below the level of the surrounding foliage if trimming to improve the plant's current appearance. If leaves are present on the scape, then trim directly above them. If no leaves are present, trim as close to the base of the scape as possible.
