- Premium is the highest grade of hickory flooring. It is also referred to as Select or Better hickory. The flooring is sorted to remove large knots, dark colored heartwood and any damaged or cracked planks. There are some slight color variations in the Premium hickory, but the pieces should be a consistent color. The Premium grade is commonly used in more formal settings.
- You will notice more color variations in the One Common hickory. Only the darkest heartwood is sorted. The grade allows for dime size knots and slight surface defects, giving it a slightly more rustic look than the Premium grade.
- Two Common hickory provides you with all of the natural characteristics hickory has to offer. Colors of the planks may vary from a very light color to a dark reddish brown. Large knotholes, wormholes and other surface defects are allowed in this grade. Two Common hickory is also known as Rustic, Mill Run and Cabin hickory. The rustic look may not be suitable for all settings, but may be an attractive choice for a country cottage or cabin.
- Calico is a carefully sorted grade of hickory. Each plank has a split color of white sapwood and dark heart wood. This unusual feature allows the installer to arrange the matching colors to form wide lines and patterns. The grade allows knots and surface defects, but this will vary. Calico hickory may be the perfect choice if you are looking for a bold and unusual flooring.
