Still Australia's richest and most popular horse race, Melbourne Cup time has come around again.
24 horses will line up at the barrier at Flemington Racecourse (barring scratching's) for the 3200-metre race, at 3pm, on Tuesday 6th November 2012.
With its unofficial name being 'the race that stops a nation' it is no surprise that Cup Day is a public holiday in the city of Melbourne, it allows for a time of celebration that involves all of Australia.
In homes, workplaces, pubs, clubs and racecourses throughout the nation, champagne corks will be popped, fascinator's worn and fine food enjoyed, all in honour of the Cup.
Melbourne Cup betting is easy, no matter where you are, with betting options available online, with a bookie and even in the workplace, with many holding sweepstakes for the Cup.
Of course, the heart of the party will be Flemington; with an absolute plethora of dining and entertainment options available to both the casual racegoer and the high roller alike.
The celebrations begin outside of the famous Flemington gates, with the street parade - a free event starring jockeys, trainers and past champions.
The parade starts at noon in Swanson Street, Melbourne, concluding at Federation square.
Back at the track, where general admission is $74 ($60 students, $40 pensioners and free for under 15's), lunchtime offers the option of fine restaurant dining, marquee dining and picnic style dining, catering to the tastes and budget of everyone.
Entertainment options are everywhere, with Fashions on the field; men's and women's race wear heats and daily finals, from 10.
30 am at East end Flemington lawn.
Live entertainment and themed marquees are aplenty.
With 100,000 plus racegoers attending the Melbourne Cup this year, the chance of rubbing shoulders with a major celebrity is higher than the Melbourne Cup odds, and a few names have been dropped, from Sarah Jessica Parker, to Nicole Kidman and even Kadek Mahardika and Mandy McElhinney ( yes, you do know them...
Ketut and Rhonda from the AAMI ad!).
The celebrity highlight will definitely be Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Duchess will actually be presenting the Melbourne Cup this year - a testament to the Cup's popularity.
So, while Flemington is definitely the place to be, there is no denying that the Melbourne Cup 2012 will be celebrated Australia wide, as well as internationally, with as much gusto and enjoyment.
