- 1). Blow up a large balloon so that it is at least six inches larger in diameter than the child's head.
- 2). Fill a bowl with warm water.
- 3). Cut a piece of plaster cloth and dip it into the warm water. Smooth the plaster cloth onto the surface of the balloon. Apply plaster cloth to the top and sides of the balloon in this manner but leave an opening at the bottom of the balloon large enough to fit over the child's head.
- 4). Let the first layer of plaster cloth dry completely and pop the balloon with a craft knife. Remove the balloon and place the plaster head on a large vase to hold it upright.
- 5). Apply two more layers of plaster cloth to the head to increase it's strength and durability.
- 6). Add additional pieces of plaster to form ears and facial features of your chosen mascot. If you need to build large ears or a snout, tape crumpled pieces of newspaper to the head and cover the newspaper with plaster cloth.
- 7). Place the dry plaster head on the child's head so that it rests on the child's shoulders. Cut the hole in the bottom of the head larger with a craft knife, if necessary. Mark the spot on the head where the child's eyes are located with a pencil.
- 8). Take it off of the child's head, then cut out eye holes with a craft knife. Tape a piece of sheer black cloth inside the head to cover the eye holes. This will allow the child to see out of the mask while creating the appearance of black pupils on the plaster head.
- 9). Paint the plaster head with acrylic craft paints.
