- Ladybugs feed on aphids, mites and other insect pests. Although they are garden helpers, they are nuisance pests when they cluster in masses on buildings or plants. They exude a disagreeable odor when disturbed. Some people are allergic or sensitive to these secretions and develop skin rashes.
- Spray soapy water on hibiscus to remove ladybugs and other insects. Mix 1/2 tsp. dishwashing liquid in 1 cup of water and spray the plant. Or make a solution of 2 tbsp. baby shampoo per gallon of water. Mix thoroughly and wet the plant. Mild soapy solutions rinse off the bugs without burning the plant. For sensitive plants, rinse the plant with clear water after a few hours.
- Remove pesky ladybugs with a vacuum. Slide a knee-length or footed nylon stocking into the vacuum hose, fold the end back over the outside of the hose and hold it in place with a rubber band on the outside of the hose. Vacuum the hibiscus, removing ladybugs and other pests. Remove the stocking, making sure the rubber band snaps over the trapped insects. Discard the stocking and its contents.
