Bad breath can place you into an embarrassing situation. There are people who are not aware that they have this condition. Bad breath in medical terminology is called halitosis. So, what is the cause of bad breath or halitosis? According to experts, there are variable causes that lead to this problem. One of the most common reasons in having halitosis depends on the food that you eat or your diet. Eating onion or garlic for instance could result into bad breath. There are other factors that contribute to this condition.

Not having a proper dental hygiene could also lead to halitosis. Brushing your teeth and flossing is important. You need to clean your teeth in order to get rid of the food particles. If you left your teeth unclean bacteria can grow and thus result into awful breath. Aside from your teeth it is also important to keep your tongue clean. Another contributing factor of halitosis is a medical condition. Having health problems like chronic sinus infection, diabetes, bronchitis, pneumonia and chronic acid reflux can also cause mouth odor. Other medical issues associated with this are gum disease and a condition called dry mouth. In addition to this, Smoking and tobacco chewing can also cause awful breath.

Preventing Bad Breath

There are things that you can do to avoid being humiliated because of mouth odor. The first most important thing that you must do is to practice good dental hygiene. Brushing and flossing are good oral practices and can reduce the unpleasant odor caused by halitosis. Brush your teeth and your tongue with toothpaste twice daily and if possible after eating. Flossing once daily can help in eliminating plaques and food particles in between your teeth. Dentists also suggest changing your toothbrush once every two or three months.

It is also important to set-up a dental appointment. Visiting your dentist regularly (at least twice a year) is necessary because having any oral problem detected can give you the assurance that it would be treated properly. Water intake can also help in preventing or reducing bad breath. Expert also advises to keep your saliva stimulated by chewing gum or sucking sugar free candies. Another important thing to do is to check your food intake or your diet. See if there are certain foods that you eat that causes you to having a bad breath.

If you are a smoker or a tobacco chewer it may be best if you could quit the habit. If you think that you have unpleasant breath it is best to seek a dentist advice. Your dentist will then determine what causes the problem and what changes or other measurements that must be taken. The dentist can also tell you if this is an oral problem or something more serious. It is important for you not to take these things for granted. If you have a bad breath brushing, flossing and mouth washing can only have a temporary effect in reducing the odor. It is always best to consult a medical professional when problem such as this occurs.
