How to Prepare for a Parole Hearing
1Fill out the parole application and submit it to the parole review board. A parole commission representative will notify you when the board sets the date for your hearing.
2
Practice telling your story. At your hearing, you have the right to tell your version of the crime. It is critical to have details straight in your mind before the hearing begins.
3
Show remorse. The parole board will be looking for evidence that you no longer constitute a threat to the community and that you take responsibility for your actions.
4
Prepare for a parole hearing by looking for a job. You must maintain stable employment throughout your parole, but the board may bar you from holding certain jobs. The parole commission must be informed of your employment prospects.
5
Think about future living arrangements. The parole commission will want to know where and how you plan to live. Some living situations may constitute a violation of your parole.
6
Prepare to turn to advocacy groups such as the ACLU (see Resources below) if your parole hearing does not go as you hoped.
7
File an appeal within 30 days of the parole hearing through the US Department of Justice (see Resources below).
