- 1). Measure the distance from the shower rod to the floor. Subtract 2 inches. Measure the width of the shower rod. Record your dimensions. Three sections will be involved in this application. The upper portion of the curtain will be 1/6 of the overall measurement. The clear vinyl portion will be 1/3 and the lower section will be 1/2. Example: In a 72 inch curtain the upper part is 12 inches, vinyl part is 24 inches and the lower half 36 inches.
- 2). Add 4 inches for side hem allowances. Add 8 inches to the top section for a 4 inch double hem (header) and 1 inch for joining this section to the vinyl. Add 8 inches to the bottom section for a 4 inch double hem and 1 inch for joining this section to the vinyl. Record your measurements.
- 3). Cut the fabric according to your recorded dimensions. Most decorator fabrics are 54 inches wide, which requires piecing fabrics together to get the correct width, unless you are able to railroad the fabric. Railroading is possible if the fabric chosen does not have a distinct up and down pattern, allowing you to cut the width of fabric needed along the grain or selvedge edge.
- 4). Split the second length of fabric, if you are piecing 54 inch fabric, and join to the sides of the first piece. Be careful to attach raw edge of split pieces to selvedge edge of center panel. Match pattern across the width at these seams. This keeps you from having a seam in the center. Pin right sides together and stitch.
- 5). Hem sides by folding in 1 inch, pressing and folding again to create a double side hem. Pin in place and stitch. Do this for the top and bottom section side hems. You can cut the vinyl to size without hemming it.
- 6). Fold 4 inches under on the top section. Press. Fold again, creating a double hem (header). Stitch in place. Mark for buttonholes or grommets 1 inch down from the top of the header, beginning 3 inches in from the side hems. Evenly space the remaining 10 buttonholes or grommets.
- 7). Press under 1/2 inch on lower edge of the top section. Fold again and press. Pin the top section to the vinyl, overlapping the folded edge onto the vinyl. Pin in place and stitch close to the edge of the fabric. Make a second row of stitching close to the vinyl edge.
- 8). Repeat step 6 with the lower section of the curtain. Attach the upper edge to the vinyl in the same manner.
- 9). Fold 4 inches under and press. Fold under again forming a double hem. Pin in place. Hang the curtain before sewing the hem. Check the length and adjust if necessary. Stitch the hem in place.
