- 1). Go to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators site (see Resources), then select the state in which you would like to search for unclaimed property. You will be directed to the state agency that handles these claims.
- 2). Click the "Search for Property" link provided on that page to begin conducting a search for unclaimed property held under your name. Put any requested personal information in the fields, such as your name and address, then hit search.
- 3). File a request to claim the unclaimed property once it has been located. A letter will be sent to you asking for the appropriate documentation to prove your identity as the owner. Copies of your Social Security card, picture ID, and proof of residency are usually required for approval.
- 4). Send the completed request form and necessary documents back to the department that sent you the request form. The amount of time you will have to wait for the unclaimed property to be released to you varies from state to state.
