Cerebral Palsy in India – The Country Coming Forward in Numerous Ways

Seriously affecting the movements, posture and balance of body, cerebral palsy is among the most common causes of physical disability among the children. The condition affects the undeveloped brain and the damage it causes is irreversible. It may affect the brain of an unborn baby or that of a baby during delivery. Children, until they attain the age of 3 after which the brain gets fully developed, remain susceptible to the condition.

In India, an estimated number of 25 lakh children and adults are affected by this form of physical disability. In the past 2 decades, a number of steps have been taken to deal with the problem. Here is a discussion about the present day scenario of this health disorder in India.

Myths and Challenges
In India, where society consists of a mix of people with conservative and modern ideas, a number of myths and challenges related to cerebral palsy exist.
One common myth among people is that it is a kind of disease. Rather than being a disease, it is a condition that needs to be managed or improved and not treated. In fact, no possible treatment can completely cure this condition.
Another myth is that the condition is caused by only medical negligence but truth is that most of the time exact causes are unknown and most of time some hypoxic event occur in immature brain.
In social perspective, the condition is considered to be a mental disorder and those affected by it are counted among mentally retarded individuals. The fact is that mental retardation is found only in 20-30% children & even few children are very intelligent. Read further to know what steps are being taken to face these myths and challenges.

€ Diagnostic services for neurological consultation and management of the problem.
€ Evaluation of the affected children at physical, cognitive, functional and communicational levels.
€ Assisting parents and family members to cope-up with the affected children and helping them to buy required aid and appliances.
€ Providing education, vocational training and computer training and encouraging the participation in co-curricular activities.
€ Offering physical therapies and speech therapy to the affected children and adults.
€ Providing extended community based services to the slum areas and people with poor economic background.

Cerebral Palsy Hospitals and Clinics
Hospitals and clinics offering alternative treatments to the individuals with cerebral palsy have been set up in many regions of India. Physiotherapy, speech language therapy, stem cell therapy, Massage, acupressure and homeopathic treatments are among the options available at these places.
Except advance therapy like NDT, SI & strength training exercise, no other modality has a proven result in this problem .The medical premises in the country also offer surgical treatments in the severe cases of muscle contractions among the patients. Finally, the idea of diagnosing the problem at its earliest has become popular for early intervention, so that treatment can be started at the earliest. Efforts are being made to diagnose this problem at the time of delivery.
