- 1). Open your antivirus software. Microsoft recommends all users run antivirus software at all times to complement Windows' basic protection. Companies that offer popular programs include McAfee, Symantec and AVG.
- 2). Click "Scan" or "Run" to scan your computer. If the option is presented, always choose the most thorough scan. Do not use your computer while the scan runs.
- 3). Review the viruses found. The scareware virus causing the virus alert may have an innocuous name, so you won't necessarily be able to pinpoint it directly. Trust the software to know what's a bug and what isn't.
- 4). Click "Remove" or similar to remove all the selected bugs. This should include whatever is causing the fraudulent pop-ups.
- 5). Restart your computer.
