- At first glance, the program "Antivirus 2009" for Microsoft Windows may seem like a legitimate antivirus program. This is not the case. "Antivirus 2009" is in fact a rogue program that promises to remove malware and other forms of infections but actually installs its own forms of infections. When your computer is infected by the program, your home page is redirected to a page that displays false information about your computer to scare you into purchasing the full version of "Antivirus 2009."
- Installing an antispyware program is the first step in removing the "Antivirus 2009" rogue program. There are a variety of programs that you can install to remove any infections. These include "Spybot--Search and Destroy," "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and "SuperAntiSpyware." Once installed, open up the antispyware program and perform a full system scan, removing every infection the program catches.
- Install an antivirus program of your choice, such as "Avast Antivirus," Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2001" and "AVG Anti-Virus." Open the program and perform a full system scan. Once the scanning is complete, remove any infections the program found.
- Downloading and burning an antivirus rescue disc allows you to scan your computer for infections that your antispyware or antivirus software may have missed. Boot your computer using your anti-virus rescue disc and scan your computer for infections before Windows boots up. This will find infections that otherwise are so hidden during startup that regular methods of finding infections don't work. If your antivirus software has a feature called "boot time scanning," you will not need an antivirus rescue disc. Schedule a boot time scan and restart your computer, resulting in your antivirus software performing the same function as an antivirus rescue disc.
