Clogged Delta Sink

Clearing a Typical Delta Sink Clog

    • To clear a clog inside the typical Delta sink drain, start by plunging the drain. All you have to do is place a plunger over the drain hole and push up and down very slowly; the suction dislodges the clogged material inside. Delta sinks have a fairly smooth strainer, so forming good suction is fairly easy. Be careful not to press down or pull back too hard because, even though Delta sinks are robust in design, vigorous plunging will loosen hardware and possibly damage the sink.

    Pipe Snakes and P-trap Removal

    • Poke a pipe snake down through the drain hole to break up that clog. Carefully work the pipe cleaner around without forcing the entire clog back down into the pipe, which just lodges the clog deeper in your sink. If the clog is too far down into the drainpipe, you have to start working on the drain trap, the pipe fitting underneath the sink. To remove this, all you need to do is unscrew the lock nuts on either side of the U-shaped fitting. Just have a bucket ready to catch runoff before you pull the fitting out.

    Difficult Delta Sink Clogs

    • A difficult clog is hard to reach, even after taking apart the drain P-trap; you should contact a plumber or a professional. Delta sinks have no special clog removing feature, and if your piping is too small, or the drain is just filled with debris and clogs happen often, the problem is not with the sink but with the plumbing. Inspect the plumbing to ensure it meets all home drain standards. Drainpipes should be at least 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

    Preventive Maintenance

    • Keeping the strainer on your Delta sink drain clear is one of the best ways to stop any clog before it starts. Scrape out all the food and waste before you run the water into your Delta sink. Scraps of food, like bread, meat and vegetable peelings, ball up inside the drain and cause a clog. Anytime you peel vegetables or fruit, always remove the peeling by hand before running the faucet. When you scrape food off of plates, scrape it into the disposal side of the Delta sink or into the trash if you do not have a disposal.
