Have you ever stopped in a shop to look at a hand painted silk scarf and held your breath at the beautiful colours and the luxurious feel of it? I have many a time and although I've been painting professionally on silk for years now, it is still a pure joy to admire original work created by someone who loves colour.
And it's even more of a pure joy to paint on silk yourself.
I just wanted to use this space to share with you my enthusiasm and passion for silk painting in the hope that you might allow that spark to grow and venture to try it out for yourself if you haven't done so already.
What I hear so often is that people tend to believe that it costs a lot of money to get kitted out with enough materials to begin this hobby.
But let me tell you this.
It needn't cost you any more than you want it to.
There are many ways of starting out on a low budget whilst still being able to produce fabulous, vibrant silk paintings that you can proudly show off to your family and friends.
Low cost watercolour brushes for applying the dyes, drawing pins or tacks to affix the silk and left over pieces of wood to create a simple frame all help to keep the costs down.
Another thing many people say about themselves is that they don't have enough talent, that they aren't arty enough.
Hey, everyone is arty in their own way.
And the beautiful thing about silk painting is that it is so forgiving.
You can apply simple brush strokes and techniques and create images that are really gorgeous.
The silk glows and the colours are vibrant which means that your artwork takes on a life of its own, enchanting everyone who looks at it.
You just can't go wrong.
Silk painting isn't just silk painting.
You can do it in so many ways.
Creating something magical to wear, making a wafty banner to hang in the breeze, creating a picture you can frame and enjoy for years to come.
Or how about some truly original soft furnishings you can pep up your living space with.
There's really no end to what you can think up and make.
So what would be the first step if you fancy having a go? There are those who feel very at home picking a book from the shelves of their local bookstore and dipping into it in the privacy of their own home.
And then again there are many who prefer the group dynamic and who sign up for a local class for some basic silk painting tuition.
The benefit of this is that you have the support of a teacher who is on hand in case things are going quite the way you expected them to.
So rather than panic, you can have fun, turning potential fiascos into interesting, creative artwork.
And imagine how much fun you can have if you normally surround yourself with subdued tones, but then dare to indulge in the vibrant oranges, reds and turquoises of silk painting? Talk about an energy lift.
I don't think there's anything to beat silk painting for pure joy, fun and free expression.
Have I managed to convince you yet? I hope I have.
If you'd like to find out more about the work I do, please have a look at my blog or visit my website.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Enjoy
