- Clowns are meant to be fun and cute and amusing, but one bad experience or one scary clown horror movie can leave a person in dread of them. There is even a name for this abnormal or exaggerated fear: coulrophobia. Is there a better time than Halloween to take advantage of something a lot of people find very freaky?
- Make your costume with dark, dreary Halloween colors like orange, black, purple, and green. Rather than the soft ruffles of the usual clown costume, trim the collar, sleeves, and cuffs with sharp, jagged edges. Give the whole costume a soot-like dusting with black or charcoal gray powered makeup. Singe some edges of the costume and wig as though your clown has been hanging out with the evil one in his personal abode.
You don't have to do a standard circus clown costume. Think about a creepy mime or a scary hobo. - You can do a lot of scary things with makeup. Make the smile more of a leer. Paint each eye just a little different. Leave off the eyebrows. There is something disturbing about a face without eyebrows. Add a scar.
You can also get some really gruesome clown masks online or from a costume shop. Wear it or put it on the back of your head to create a two-headed clown.
Use an unnatural color like green for the hair. Add tangles and a few bugs. - Carry a bloody ax or knife. Put a little blood on the neck of a rubber chicken or a full-headed clown mask. Carry a small creepy little puppet, doll, or martinet or carry a suitcase with part of the doll hanging out. Be sure to carry on a disturbing conversation with it from time to time.
