JAA License - The Airline Transport Pilots License

Today there are more orders filling the books of the aircraft manufacturing industry, and a large percentage of those will be for the European market.
But as the problem of aging pilots comes to fruition in the next few years who will replace them? The costs of becoming a pilot has risen 300% over the last 10 years and is set to keep going up.
Couple that with the fact that so many students are now failing and dropping out of JAA Training programs, especially for the JAA ATPL, there will be a real shortage in the field within a few years.
But the authorities will not make getting the JAA license easier.
In fact is could become even harder by 2012.
To solve this shortage and cost increase, many are turning to the USA, where the license is cheaper and easier to obtain.
They then proceed down a JAA conversion route to save time and money.
But here is where caution is advised.
Purchasing online question banks from un-approved sources can lead you to be in possession of old, out of date material, and will not be an entrance to taking the tests.
Only an approved school can sign in a candidate for exams.
The requirements for the JAA License (ATPL) are dependant upon your current pilots license.
For the JAA ATPL, choose which of the following BOLD statements you fit into: You have a Private Pilots License issued by an ICAO Member state (Like the FAA): Your Requirements in Brief:
  • Pass 14 Written Exams
  • Obtain a First Class Medical
  • Pass a Commercial Pilots Flight Test after completing a 28 Hour Training Program
  • Pass an Instrument Flight Test
Details of the conversion Process.
You will be required to complete a Ground school course with an approved training provider who will sign you off to take the examinations.
The course, premises and staff must be approved by a JAA Authority.
The course comprises 680 training hours which includes 70 hours in class split over two weeks.
This is designated as the "Pre-Exam Course" and is your final opportunity to prepare yourself for the real JAA exams.
Throughout the course you will follow a program designed to make it easy on you and your current work commitments.
At the same time, it is flexible enough so that you may move through the course at your own pace.
Split into two modules of seven subjects, each subject will contain periodic tests which must be passed.
The course program will direct you when to take these tests.
Once you have completed the 14 written examinations, you will need to complete a JAA course for the Commercial Pilots Licence.
This is a 25 hour course for single engine or a 28 hour course for multi engine and can be completed at any of the training locations in the USA or at any country that has a Bi-lateral agreement with the UK CAA.
If you hold an ICAO IR, each of these courses are reduced by 10 hours.
Following the CPL you will need to pass an Instrument Rating.
The training for this MUST be done in European airspace.
It is a 55 hour course, but should you hold an ICAO Instrument Rating, you are given a 40 hour exemption to the 55 hour course.
This leaves you with a 15 hour conversion back in Europe.
Holding the ICAO IR will reduce your costs by a substantial amount.
You have a Commercial Pilots License and or an Instrument Rating issued by an ICAO Member state: Your Requirements in Brief:
  • Pass 14 Written Exams
  • Obtain a First Class Medical
  • Pass a Commercial Pilots Flight Test after completing training as required
  • Pass an Instrument Flight Test after a 15 hour training program
Details of the Conversion Process   If you hold an ICAO Commercial Pilots License then your study hour's requirements are reduced by 200 hours.
This is then transferred down to the time you are required to spend in class on the mandatory Pre-Exam Course being reduced to 48 hours.
If you hold an instrument rating then you can also reduce the course by 200 hours.
If you hold both a CPL and an IR then the course may be reduced by 350 hours, meaning you only have to complete 10% of the remaining hours in the classroom.
Of course it is recommend that you still attend the pre-exam course for each module as it will greatly improve not only your chances of passing but also your passing grade being high enough to make you stand out.
However should circumstances such as you current job prohibit you from taking too much time off, this option allows you to attend a three day pre-exam course for module one and a two day pre-exam course for module two, or any other combination of days to suit your schedule.
Once you have passed all 14 written examinations, you will need to pass a JAA Commercial check ride.
This can be completed at any of the training locations in the USA or Florida, or at any country that has a Bi-lateral agreement with the UK CAA.
To take the JAA check ride you will need to complete "Training as Required" by the chief pilot of the FTO you choose.
Once they are satisfied that you are up to standards, checked by a practice exam call a 170-A, you will then be able to take the real check-ride with a JAA approved examiner.
Typically you should look for between 3 to 10 hours training for this section.
Following the CPL you will need to pass and Instrument Rating.
The training for this MUST be done in European airspace.
It is a 55 hour course, but should you hold an ICAO Instrument Rating, you are given a 40 hour exemption to the 55 hour course.
This leaves you with a 15 hour conversion back Europe.
Holding the ICAO IR will reduce your costs by a substantial amount.
In either case you will be issued with a JAA License at the completion
