Simple Green Practices for Students at School

Trying to help save the planet doesn't have any age requirement. Even kids can do their own share in preserving the environment. There are many ways on how each one of us can take part in reducing environmental issues. Whether at home, office or school, carrying out the simplest form of green practice can make a big difference.

At the present, going green has become the talk of the town. In fact, many educational institutions join this campaign by promoting green projects in their campuses. For school children, these initiatives are pretty simple and ordinary. Maybe some of them do not truly realize how big is the possible effect of their small effort.

1. Using Recycled Paper

Papers come from trees. So, imagine how many trees are exploited to make hundreds of thousands of paper sheets. To produce papers, there are chemicals used in the processes which could be harmful to the environment. Students can help reduce cutting of too many trees for paper making. How they can help? By simply using recycled papers.

When purchasing paper, check out the materials used in manufacturing it. Opt for the one with high percentage of recycled supplies. Many paper manufacturers make use of old papers (waste) to make new ones. Students who prefer recycled paper are helping trees preservation.

2. Opting for Green Pens and Pencils

Many school supplies these days are made from recycled materials. As a matter of fact, pens and pencils also have recycled versions. Biodegradable pencils are environmentally safe which means they won't bring any harm when dispose. Students must use their pencils until such time that they are very short and are hard to hold.

For those who are using pens, it is wise to opt for the refillable types. In the event that there's no more ink, you will not have to throw away the whole pen. Instead you may just purchase the ink tube and replace the old one.

3. Practicing Garbage Segregation

When throwing away trashes, students should separate the biodegradable and the non-biodegradable. For instance in the art class, paper residue should be placed in the garbage bin meant for biodegradable. Meanwhile, plastic must be thrown into the non-biodegradable trash can. Bottles and other things that can be recycled have to be kept separately.

4. Starting up a Garden

Another means of practicing green in school is by starting up a garden in the yard. Those students who enjoy growing plants would really enjoy this initiative. Students could grow vegetables which they can harvest in time. Teachers must be able to educate the students about the importance of plants not just to us human beings but to animals too. Aside from planting vegetables, they may also grow flowers or trees. If there is not enough space for a garden, planting in pots is a good option.

5. Going on a Nature Field Trip

Going out for an excursion is an excellent way of introducing the students to the nature. This is a good way to teach the children about the plants and other living organisms in the ecosystem. Learning is much easier when students are able to see and witness actual things. Being aware concerning the environment can help the children think of what are right and wrong practices.

The go green initiatives of several educational institutions can lead to positive effects on the planet. Aside from the academic lessons, these practices teach the younger generation how to live a better life while caring for the environment. School children will not just gain knowledge about Mathematics, Science and History in the school but about environment preservation as well.
