Before starting with this article, would like to give a brief about the TMJ pain. For those who are wondering what it means, it stands for Temporomandibular joint pain. This pain is there in the joint between the jaws and there could be various reasons for having this pain. The TMJ actually connects lower jaw, which is also known as the mandible to the temporal bone in the skull. This temporal bone is in the ears front portion.
We all know that few facial muscles are responsible for controlling the chewing. And, when we have problems in this area, you can feel the TMJ symptoms. These symptoms are as follows:
A pain shoots up in the head and in the neck. Also, there are pains in the ears and constant headaches.
You could also have problems in biting and doing the clicking of jaws.
The might be some muscle spasms as well in this TMJ problem. So, whenever you talk or chew, you will face the pain.
You could also find a swelling on your mouth and face where it is affected.
You might have problems in opening your mouth fully.
You will also feel dizzy and nauseous.
Here is the TMJ syndrome Overview:
TMJ comprises of muscles, nerves, blood vessels and bones. There are two TMJs on either side of the jaws. When the mouth is opened and closed, the muscles move. And, the jawbone which is controlled by TMJ has to do two kinds of movements, rotation and hinge action. This means that the mouth has the open and close and also needs to do the gliding action. This action involves opening of the mouth even wider. This action will allow one to talk, laugh, chew and yawn.
When you place the fingers in front of the ears and then open up the mouth, you would be able to feel the jaw joint and the movement. When your mouth is opened, your lower jaws rounded end will glide along the socket of temporal bone. When you close the mouth, the condyles will slide back to original position. For keeping this motion smooth, there is this cartilages soft disc which lies between the temporal bone and condyle. This disc will absorb the shock given to the TMJ joint. When one does chewing, it creates strong force and this disc will help in distributing the forces of the chewing throughout joint space.
When you are facing so much of a problem, it would be better to go to a TMJ specialist for treatment. There are various specialists around who would be able to give you some immediate relief and will also be able to treat you. He would treat you in such a way that your pain will vanish. It is so difficult to even do normal things with this problem. One will have to eat from one side and cant even talk properly.
Get yourself the much needed TMJ treatment before your problem becomes too severe.
