Appreciating the Importance of Care Home Inspection Reports

The Care Quality Commission is an independent regulator of health and social care in England.
In 2013/14 they began to introduce new and tougher approaches to inspecting care services.
These rigorous and expert led inspections have now provided the entire country with a deeper and more up to date understanding of social care.
The findings coming out from these inspections do make for some very interesting reading.
For starters, even though they have found numerous examples of good and outstanding care being provided, they have also found a wide variation in terms of quality of service.
These findings have revealed that there is a very huge difference in the quality of care people receive and experience in different places, from different providers and at different times of the week or even day.
To ensure that their inspection reports are uniform, objective and responsive, the inspectors who visit these homes are usually guided by five questions or queries.
The first thing inspectors are keen on answering is, How safe is the home?; Is the Home Effective? Are they caring? Are they responsive to people's needs? And finally, are they well led? The answers to these five questions do help the inspectors to come up with objective and accurate inspection reports.
Across social and health care, it has been found that staff generally provide compassionate care even though there are two aspects of service quality that stand out, leadership and basic safety.
The need for strong and effective leadership at all levels of an organisation is not only vital but is a necessity.
Through their inspections, they found out that good leadership does drive safety and quality.
It has also been realized that well led homes and organisations tend to have effective and strong leadership which is supportive and open.
They are usually committed to ensuring caring, safe, responsive and effective care to their clients.
One of the major factors which affect the quality of service is the recruitment of personnel.
The shortage of nurses has been of great concern to the relevant authorities and currently there are concerted efforts being made to encourage more nurses to work in the segment of the health sector.
In terms of leadership, inspections have shown that homes which employ a registered manager tend to provide better care.
The performance against quality standards was between ten and fifteen percent (10-15%) higher for care homes which had a registered manager when compared with those without.
These inspections also revealed that care homes without a registered manager were more than twice as likely to be non-compliant when compared against those which had a registered manager.
In a nut shell, these inspection reports did find out that in the year 2013/14 there was significant improvement in the performance of what is termed as the care and welfare standard' even though the performance on safeguarding and safety over the same period was slightly weaker when compared against the previous year.
Generally, Care home services were better at treating people with and dignity even though there was a slight dip on ensuring they are all safe.
