- 1). Wash off any faded finish or paint using mineral spirits. Use cotton swabs doused in the mineral spirits to scrub away the color. Let the ornament dry before you continue.
- 2). Fill any cracks in the ornament with plastic filler putty. Smooth it out over the crack using a wooden popsicle stick. Let the putty dry before you do anything else with the ornament.
- 3). Reattach any broken pieces using super glue. Hold the broken piece in place until the glue dries completely.
- 4). Sand down the entire surface of the ornament, including the rough parts of the plastic putty and excess glue, using 400-grit sandpaper. This makes a seamless patch for your plastic ornament and makes it easier for the paint to stick onto the surface of the plastic.
- 5). Wipe the sand left from the sanding from the face of the plastic ornament. Leftover dust will interfere with the paint.
- 6). Brush acrylic paint onto your plastic ornament. Keep your brush strokes moving in a single direction while you apply the color.
- 7). Rinse your paintbrush in a glass of water often. Do not let the acrylic paint dry on the brush or it may become useless.
- 8). Bend the hook at the top of the ornament until it is able to hook over the branches of your Christmas tree again. If the hook is beyond repair, you can replace it with a bent paper clip.
- 9). Restring the ornament if the hook on top is string or flexible wire. Tie the top of the string in a double knot.
