- Centipede grass does best without a lot of lime and fertilizer. If your soil is particularly deficient in nutrients, the best fertilizer for planting centipede lawns is a 16-4-8 formula. After that, a 15-0-15 formula is ideal.
- Apply a 16-4-8 fertilizer to the soil before planting a centipede lawn. All future applications of fertilizer should be in early summer, with a 15-0-15 formula.
- Apply 10 lbs. of 16-4-8 fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of planting area. Annual applications of a 15-0-15 fertilizer should be based on a soil test. If you prefer not to test the soil, apply the fertilizer at the rate listed on the bag for the size of your lawn.
