Being largest and holiest place of (UP) Uttar Pradesh, according to Hindu mythology, Allahabad was chosen by Lord Brahma as a holy land where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the third mythical river, Saraswati met and formed a confluence. The city being named as the emperor of all sacred places centres or the Tirth Raj is a direct consequence of the confluence of these holy rivers. It has also been mentioned in the epics and Vedas as Prayag, its former name. It was renamed by Emperor Akbar in 1575 as Illahabad, before becoming the modern Allahabad.
