Not to be confused with bad lip readings, in which song lyrics are hilariously misunderstood, Lip Dubs are homemade music videos which feature people lip synching along to a popular song. These videos are usually shot in one long camera take with no cuts or edits, and the original song is then later added (dubbed) over the video.
Over the past six years or so, we've seen some truly funny and creative lip dubs. We've seen high schoolers performing elaborately choreographed videos, news anchors "rapping," and even a few creative marriage proposals, but these five recent contributions to the genre blow the rest away. Enjoy!
Iggy Azalea's hit song "Fancy" has already been the subject of countless funny video parodies, but this sweet and simple father/daughter lip dub trumps them all.
This video, entitled "not Frozen "Let It Go" its IGGY Fancy lip dub," was uploaded to YouTube on April 13, 2014, and quickly racked up over five million views in just a few weeks online. In the clip, a very cool dad and his kid are driving in the car, just lip synching along to "Fancy," as one does. Adorkable.More »
In April of 2014, Avon High School students in Indiana created what could be the best group lip dub to date. The best part? They did it all to benefit a local children's hospital, and together they raised $23,900.
The most impressive aspect of this very-well done six minute video is the scope of both the song selection, and the number of students who participated in the video. The students covered a whopping 68 pop songs, and every social clique imaginable is represented, from Lacrosse jocks to band geeks, and everyone in between.
Hit songs like Get Lucky, What Does The Fox Say, Wrecking Ball, and a whole lot more have never sounded this awesome.More »
They had me at "Swedish Marines," am I right, ladies?
This group of Swedish Marines (fanning self) stationed in Afghanistan got a little bored one day, so they decided to do a fun lip dub of the classic song "Greased Lightning," from the musical "Grease."More »
Officers Aerial Ronell and Ranell Roy, of the Rosenberg, Texas police department, were out on patrol when they decided to sing along to Katy Perry's song, "Dark Horse." The Rosenberg PD then uploaded the lip dub to YouTube with the title "Hip Hop Cops." The clip quickly went viral.
My favorite part, aside from the synchronized head bobs and the fact that we rarely get so see cops cutting loose like this, is that the dude sings Katy's part. If you think the blonde cop isn't going to do anything... keep watching.More »
Life off the west coast of Africa on board an oil tanker must get pretty dull, which is why the crew of the Bourbon Peridot spent a day dubbing the epic 1983 tune "Africa" one day in October 2013.
This might seriously be my favorite lip dub of all time (Sorry, Swedish marines). The big, tough men are clearly having a lot of fun making this video, and everyone from the kitchen crew to the ship's doctor and captain get in on the fun. Also, how did I forget how awesome this song is?More »
