- 1). Get a retail job in sales at any place that you prefer. By gaining sales experience, you are setting a solid foundation for transitioning into car insurance. While experience is typically not required to train to be an insurance agent, sales experience does give you an edge over other candidates. Aim for at least three months of sales experience.
- 2). Use the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents website to get the Web address of your state department of insurance. On that site you will find the licensing requirements for your state. You do not need to be licensed before getting trained, but you can start studying in advance, which can give you an edge over other applicants for an insurance agent position.
- 3). Visit some of the local insurance agency offices in your area to see if there are any openings for car insurance agent trainees. As a trainee, you will partner with an experienced agent. As you make sales, the agent will split the commission with you, since you are not yet licensed. Typically once you have trained at an agency, the agency will pay for you to get licensed.
