Children will often draw pictures for their parents, and this art is proudly displayed on refrigerators and office cubicles across the world.
How about channeling your inner child and creating something a bit more grown up? And you don't need to have any drawing or artistic talent, just a small ability to coordinate colors.
Purchase some small art canvases and about 3 or 4 different tubes of oil based paint that will coordinate with your living room or bedroom (or any room!).
You will also need some low-cost, but elegant looking picture frames, small container of paint thinner, small dixie cups, plastic drinking straws, and two or three different sized artist's paintbrushes.
Splatter Art - Version I Before you begin, make sure your floors, table, and yourself are well covered.
This is a fun project, but it can get messy! Squeeze small amounts of paint into their own little dixie cups.
Mix in paint thinner that is about half the amount of the paint and stir well.
Dip a drinking straw into the paint and carefully blow into the other end of the straw over the art canvas, moving the straw as you blow through it.
Repeat dipping and blowing through the straw until you are happy with the splatter and the color coverage.
Repeat the above process as many times as you like with as many colors as you like.
Long, soft exhalations through the straw will result in a finer mist, where a short, fierce exhalation will concentrate the color in a smaller space.
Once your splatter art is complete, let it dry flat in dry area free from sunlight.
Once dry, frame and hang up your art work.
Splatter Art - Version II This technique is even messier and more entertaining the first technique.
Once again, you will want to prep the oil paint with paint thinner in a 2:1 ratio.
Instead of using straws this time, you will use the paint brush and although not required, you might want to have an easel for this technique.
Prop the canvas up on the easel, or against a stack of books covered in newspaper.
Stand back from the canvas about 2-3 feet and make sure the floor is covered between you and the canvas.
Now load the paintbrush up with the paint mixture in the dixie cup and fling in the direction of the canvas.
Flick your wrists in different directions with each of your paints to produce unique trails of color.
Abstract Puffs of Color You won't need the dixie cups for the abstract puffs technique, but you may want to invest in an artist's palette and a large paint brush (or a lady's makeup brush).
Dab the brush in the color of your choice and dab in random intervals on the canvas.
The more delicate the dab, the lighter the puff.
The more forceful the dab, the more dense the puff.
If you dab the puffs in a circle or a clump and then dab a different colored puff in the middle, your finished product will look like abstract flowers.
For a small price, you are able to create trendy looking artwork for any room in your home, with custom colors of your choosing.
Enjoy your new craft!
