- Wood shavings are a common choice of bedding for rabbits and other small animals but only some varieties are safe to use. Non-aromatic hardwood shavings are safe for bunnies and can be used as bedding but pine or cedar or softwood shavings are not safe for use. There have volatile oils that could damage your bunny's liver. If you're unsure if a particular brand of shavings is made of hard or soft wood, ask the retailer for more information.
- Both hay and straw are safe to use as bedding for a rabbit and they have the added advantage that your bunny can eat them, so they double as food. If you choose to use straw as bedding for your rabbit, make sure you buy a dust-free brand. Living in a dusty environment is bad for a rabbit's lungs and can cause respiratory diseases or infections, which are hard to cure.
- Natural non-clumping cat litter is a safe bedding for rabbits. Choose an unscented, cardboard-pellet variety. This type of bedding is nontoxic, absorbent and doesn't trail or scatter outside the hutch. Although non-clumping cat litter is safe for bunnies, the clumping variety isn't, so make sure you don't confuse the two. Clumping litter can block up your rabbit's insides if swallowed and it also tends to be messy and unpleasant to handle.
- Shredded paper and cardboard are both safe to use as bedding in rabbit hutches. It's best to use store-bought shredded card or paper that is designed for use as bedding because these products are certain to be nontoxic and low in dust. Shredded cardboard is preferable to shredded paper because paper can get soggy when it absorbs urine but it is still safe to use.
