How to Quit Smoking When Others Around You Still Smoke

Smoking is a very social activity and it's hard to quit smoking when your friends still smoke.
You'll always have someone to bum one last cigarette off of or who will be hoping that you fail and start smoking again.
In most cases, these friends are jealous and wish that they could quit smoking themselves, but instead they try to discourage your from quitting.
Quitting in a situation like this is much harder than when you quit in a supportive environment.
So it becomes doubly important for you to stick to your guns.
Here are some tips to quit smoking while others around you still smoke:
  • Remember your reasons and make them solid.
    Your reasons for wanting to quit smoking need to be strong.
    It can't just be a feeling that you "should" quit smoking.
    That's not good enough.
    Focus on something like not wanting your children to smoke or avoiding illness.
  • Avoid your friends.
    While you can't avoid your friends forever, you may want to take some time away from them when you first start to quit.
    The first few days and weeks of quitting smoking are the hardest, so if you avoid smokers during this time, you will have a higher chance of success.
  • Talk to yourself about the negatives of smoking when you see other people doing it.
    Think about how all of your friends smell like smoke.
    Recognize when someone starts coughing.
    Remind yourself that smoking is disgusting.
    This little trick will help you to never smoke again.
  • Ask people to meet in smoke free environments.
    Many states now have laws preventing you from smoking indoors.
    These are great places to go to hang out with your friends.
    When they go out for a smoke, you can stay in and be comfortable.
    If your state doesn't have a law about this, try to find a place that is smoke-free.
