Is it Bad If You Use More Than One Acne Product on Your Face?

    Consistency

    • Don't be afraid to use more than one product, but remember it's important to stay within the same product line, because the ingredients in each item are designed to work together. You should give products enough time to work, usually six to eight weeks, before switching to something new.

    Considerations

    • Choose products with mild, effective ingredients.Image by Flickr.com, courtesy of Betsy Fletcher

Although you can use more than one acne product on your face, don't overdo it with unnecessary add-ons that can get in the way of acne-fighting ingredients. The main things you need for a good skin regimen are cleanser, toner and moisturizer (maybe one serum). Acne products should be mild, noncomedogenic (don't clog pores) and contain such beneficial ingredients as salicylic acid, which help clear up acne without aggravating it.

    Benefits

    • When you stay with the same product line for the proper period of time, you can more accurately assess what is working to help clear up your acne. You can substitute one item that may not be working for another product in the same line; for instance, if a moisturizer is making your skin too oily, you can opt for the line's oil-free alternative.

    Expert Insight

    • Research the products you're considering, and look for the term "dermatologist tested" when making your choice. It's no guarantee that a specific product will work for you, but a skin care expert's seal of approval indicates the product is of good quality.

    Warning

    • If you're limiting product use to the basics and sticking to the same line but see that your acne is getting more severe, you should stop using the products instead of waiting six to eight weeks for results.
