Monday, October 3, 2011 – The cadets of Robert Land Academy Military School located in Wellandport, Ontario awoke early in the morning in anticipation of the first day of the annual Fall Exercise, a 3 day trek covering nearly 90 kilometers of the Niagara Peninsula. Each fall, this exercise has become the proving ground for Recruits - those students who joined the Academy at the start of the school year in September - as well as for those who joined the school in previous years and look forward to repeating this experience.
Following a hearty breakfast, cadets and faculty loaded buses at 9 am and headed to the starting off point at Kinsman Community Park overlooking the picturesque Niagara Peninsula above Beamsville, Ontario. After a few minutes of stretching and a last minute adjustment to their packs, groups stepped off on their way down the Bruce Trail.
The morning rain made for very muddy and slippery trails along the way. However, spirits remained high and all groups arrived safely at their destination, Camp Wetaskiwin in St. Catharines. Here they were treated to a well deserved dinner of hot stew, rice and rolls. Following dinner the cadets welcomed their warm sleeping bags where their weary bodies will have a chance to recuperate for their next day's journey.
Robert Land Academy cadets were pleased to welcome cadets from Massannutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock, Virginia and soldiers from the New Mexico National Guard, who have again joined them this year for the exercise. This exercise has become an annual event for the members from MMA and the National Guard, who look forward to travelling to Canada to join Robert Land Academy, who has been hosting this exercise since its founding in 1978.
Day two will take cadets farther east into Niagara where they will end their day at the 1812 British Garrison of Fort George in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Check back for further tales at the end of Day 2.
